A new format…
This issue of C2I2 sees a change from our previous three issues, which focused on the kidney, heart and liver, respectively. For 2004, we have introduced a variety of topics in each issue, designed to appeal and encourage debate across a range of specialities. For this issue, we are pleased to present articles covering positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), radiation safety in interventional radiology, CT-colonography and colonoscopy, and renovascular hypertension. The theme of renovascular hypertension will continue in C2I2 through this year as three articles examine the epidemiology, imaging and management approaches in addressing this clinical problem.
The same aims…
We continue to aim to provide high quality articles that inform readers about some of the current, key issues in imaging and so aid their decisions in clinical practice. In addition to emphasising areas of consensus, our commitment to encourage high-level debate in topics of confounding results and controversy also remains. In this issue, we include a debate on the indications for CT-colonography compared with colonoscopy from two specialists in their field, and would welcome feedback and opinions from readers on the issues raised. We hope that C2I2 continues to enable interaction and crossover of knowledge between specialities and thereby contribute ultimately to the optimisation of patient care.
In this issue…
|
- Professor von Schulthess of Zurich, Switzerland, presents a review of PET-CT detailing the principles of this rapidly growing imaging modality, its current applications for tumour staging, and the likely future indications.
- Professor Radermacher from Hannover, Germany, starts our series of articles on renovascular hypertension by reviewing the epidemiology and clinical presentation of this condition.
- Dr Laghi and Dr Hassan, both based in Rome, Italy, provide a stimulating debate on CT-colonography versus conventional colonoscopy. Dr Laghi discusses the current indications for virtual colonoscopy and considers the possibility of this technique as a screening method and an alternative procedure when conventional colonoscopy is not feasible. Dr Hassan presents the benefits of colonoscopy as a safe and cost-effective procedure for general population colorectal cancer screening.
- Mark Hanson of Canterbury, UK, describes a best practice for ensuring radiological safety in our institutions and the protection of specialist staff in interventional radiology and cardiology.

We are sure you will find this issue of C2I2 enjoyable and stimulating. We welcome your comments and opinions and hope that we can present and address topics raised by our readers in future issues.
